Happy New Month folks!
Or that was supposed to be last week?
Let’s talk about motivation today.
And indeed, not everyone wants to, or will be great, and that is fine. (Not Really)
But for those of you interested in fulfilling your potential this is for you.
I feel I probably need to refer to Jim Collins, the author of ‘Good to Great’
I read the book in 2018 when I was working in Sierra Leone. Here are the very first few sentences of the book.
“Good is the enemy of Great. And that is one of the key reasons why we have so little that becomes great.
We don’t have great schools, principally because we have good schools.
We don’t have great government, principally because we have good government. Few people attain great lives, in large part because it is just so easy to settle for a good life. The vast majority of companies never become great, precisely because the vast majority become quite good- and that is their main problem.”
People!!!, can you believe that up until the point when I went for this book, ‘Good to Great’ from my book shelf, to quote the first sentences, I thought, I came up with the sentence ‘Good is the enemy of great?’ What a joke! Lol
But here is the point. Sometimes you may not be pushing further in your career because you got good.
You got to a point where you felt or perhaps feel that you are ok and there is nothing else to do
or nothing else to prove.
What is happening is that you were motivated to get to the point you are, and you did what was
required to get there.

Now after you got there you forgot to set a new destination.
One thing that has not been emphasized enough in career development is that it is an evolving
journey.
I find it strange that some people are sometimes reluctant to set goals because they feel that
they have to be bound by those goals, so they would rather not set any goal.
Well, if you do not have a destination, you don’t have direction and in effect no motivation, so
you will be stuck.
Listen, I feel that for some people, it might be pure mediocrity because the point
they are calling good, is really the tip of the iceberg.
You are playing small.
There is so much possibility and potential you must harness.
I can give you many reasons why you must strive to fulfill your potential, because sometimes,
people say but why must I ask more from life?
But I will give you three reasons:
- Because you deserve it
- Because you will be fulfilled
- So that you don’t have regrets later in life.
May you have a great career.
